Home Office Scientific Development Branch

£43,325-£55,837 + benefits

Leading a team of scientific and technical officers, within a delegated budget and to agreed timescales, you will play a major role in developing innovative solutions, and in evaluating and applying new technologies – often with national security as the principal concern. These may include vapour and trace detection techniques (such as Ion Mobility Spectrometry), bulk detection and imaging techniques (such as X-ray imaging), metal detection and millimetre wave/terahertz imaging.

Working in partnership with other government departments and security agencies, R&D may be carried out in-house or alongside industry and academia. The Explosives and Weapons team also helps to develop international standards and regulations for transport and public safety, and works closely with the HOSDB Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear team.

As well as providing up-to-date technical understanding and programme leadership, you will take a highly supportive approach to the professional development of colleagues. By inspiring them and monitoring their performance against clearly defined programme strategies, you will drive continuous improvement in the quality of output.

Essential skills for this role include the ability to analyse and assimilate challenging problems, determine suitable courses of action and onwardly communicate complex information in a way that is clear and persuasive. You will be capable of developing a network of collaborative links with scientific and technical counterparts in the UK and overseas. Along with a degree (or equivalent) in a physical science or engineering, experience of one or more aspects of explosives and weapons detection is essential.
