Home Office

Think to Protect

About HOSDB

The Home Office Scientific Development Branch is home to a unique team of scientists and engineers. We know of no other organisation in the world that conducts such a wide range of work in policing and security technology.

Our work is as complex as it is wide ranging. We fight crime by improving techniques in gathering information, intelligence and evidence. We protect the police and the public in hazardous situations. And we support the Home Secretary’s responsibilities for counter terrorism.

We employ over 200 people from numerous technical disciplines. These dedicated, forward thinking professionals are based across our two UK sites; at Sandridge in Hertfordshire and Langhurst in West Sussex.

Our organisation is divided into four business units:

Physical Security

protecting the public and our critical national infrastructure from terrorist attack and securing our prisons.

National Technical Support Unit

supporting high-end law enforcement agencies with advanced technological solutions for search and surveillance operations.

Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosives

employing detection, identification and monitoring solutions to prevent terrorist attacks and support the emergency services in dealing with any event.

Investigation, Enforcement and Protection

supporting all forms of policing in fingerprint and video recovery, detecting the presence of drugs, denying criminals the use of the roads and protecting our police officers.

Join us in any one of the influential roles listed in this website, and you’ll contribute to a team which is respected and listened to by government ministers, police chiefs and security services — not just in this country but internationally.
